Victor Acosta, manager of Vietnamese side Thai Son Bac, looks back on his fourth season at the club and discusses the team’s sporting objectives for the coming campaign
1. You’re starting your fourth season at the helm of Thai Son Bac – how are you approaching this new campaign?
We’re approaching it with a real desire to do even better, as last season we came within a whisker of winning the league title, which slipped away from us on goal difference.
2. The team has just won the Vietnam Cup; what are the club’s collective objectives?
Yes, for the second consecutive season we’ve won the Vietnam Cup playing very well, with the statistics showing us to be the best team in both defence and attack. The main objective is to win the League, and if we win a third consecutive Cup, it would be a historic achievement and an unbeatable season.
3. In sporting terms, what goals have you set for this season?
The main goal is to win the league title, as we’ve finished runners-up for two years running. Another objective is to get more players into the national team. At the moment, we have seven young players performing well in the Vietnamese national team, but we always want to keep growing and contributing to Vietnamese futsal.
4. How has the team changed ahead of this fourth season?
Every year, during pre-season, we try to play in tournaments and friendly matches against teams from Asia. We’ve been playing against strong teams from Malaysia and Indonesia for the past two years, which has helped the young players improve significantly. This year, we’ve brought in three players who were part of Vietnam’s U-20 champions to join our second team. I have a young squad with a lot of quality, so I believe we’ve improved compared to last season.
5. On an individual level, what goals have you set yourself?
To win the League and make TSB the best futsal team in Vietnam. Also, to take TSB to the Asian Club Cup.
